Hamilton to West Yellowstone

Sat 4th June

We were ready for the off by 9am this morning but Craig’s heated grips had given up. He tried to get them replaced/repaired without success so was reverted to winter gloves. Not that he needed them for much of the day, as we basked in warm, unbroken sunshine.

The terrain changed from a narrow river valley yesterday to the wide open plains of Montana today. This is Cowboy territory where the boys wear Stetsons as soon as they can walk. We felt like modern day gangsters riding through town.....

I expected Wyatt Earp, swinging his six shooters, to walk out of the office. We rode up into the hills, climbing to an altitude of about 7000ft at the top of 'Lost trail Pass.

There is still plenty of snow about at these altitudes.......

This could be contender for our 2011 Christmas card (the gorilla pod is coming in very handy Debs. Thank you).

We crossed onto the high plains where the views went on for miles with snow capped mountains in the far distance whichever way you looked

Bighole Church

For those of you who are following our progress, our route went via Wisdom, Jackson, Big Hole through to Dillon.....

....all the high Plain area is above 6000ft

....riding the High Road

......an interloper on an old BMW K series. Let us know who it is

After the high plain plains we dropped down into Gold Rush territory and rode through two extraordinary towns that have been preserved and are now tourist attractions

Virginia City

Nevada City

Bob particularly got into the experience. He started trying on the Stetsons at the local store.....

He should prove a big hit with the cowboys at tonight’s 'Yea Ha' (Barn Dance)
